David Kunzmann
Discipline Capgemini Consulting (CC)
Why did you apply to Capgemini?
After 3 years of working and playing hard at Cambridge University, I wanted to pursue a career that was challenging, interesting and importantly, would allow me to meet and work with a huge variety of people. Having spent a summer working as an Analyst in the Investment Banking industry, I began to realise that a career in consulting would allow me to achieve this ambition. After speaking to several members of Capgemini at recruitment events I was impressed by the breadth and diversity that a consulting career could offer. I decided to apply, which was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
What is your favourite aspect about Capgemini?
It sounds like a cliché, but it really is about the people. Since joining I have worked with such a diverse range of bright and talented individuals from a huge spectrum of backgrounds. Professionally this has helped me to learn from the very best and develop my skills in areas such as stakeholder management and facilitation. From a personal perspective this makes Capgemini a fun and social place to work, and really does help to bring out the best in me.
Why would you recommend Capgemini as a graduate employer?
Capgemini makes it clear that one of its key focuses is on attracting, maintaining and developing talent. For me this has meant a constant supply of fresh challenges to help me develop, formal training to learn core skills, and a fun and social environment in which to thrive. When you add this to a huge network of colleagues that want to bring out the best in you (as well as have a good time along the way), as a graduate at Capgemini you really are in a great position.
What is the best thing you have learned during your time at Capgemini?
I have learned how to be flexible. In consultancy your environment is constantly changing. You are constantly facing new challenges and working in very different environments. Being able to adapt in the face of this is key. I have learned how to go into situations, build relationships and ultimately to start solving client’s problems as soon as possible. As I have progressed throughout the CDC graduate programme, I have become more confident in doing this, and get a real buzz out of venturing into the unknown feeling self-assured that I will be able to settle-in to approaching a fresh challenge. Regardless of what career you pursue, this is a key skill that is highly valued, and certainly acquired as part of the CDC programme.
What is the best part about your graduate scheme?
The Consultant Development Community (CDC) programme is unique to the consulting industry and offers you a fantastic balance between delivery work, formal training and internal project management responsibilities. In my first 18 months I have worked on five different projects across three sectors, each presenting a new challenge and learning opportunity. This has ranged from designing and facilitating interactive workshops for senior stakeholders, through to analysing customer trends in the retail sector. When you add this to the first-rate training offered, and the internal responsibilities that you are encouraged to take on (I got the opportunity to lead a team of 8 consultants) there really is no better place to be.
