I’d heard great things about the graduate scheme through a friend’s older brother, so when Capgemini presented in Manchester, I went along to find out more. I met current graduates who were really motivated by challenges and came across as enthusiastic about their work. I learnt about the diverse opportunities available to work on different types of projects and rotate across a range of industries and this variety of work was something I was looking for.
In the last year and a half alone, I’ve worked at a large Telecoms Operator looking at customer facing operations, in a specialised Events Centre (which we call the Accelerated Solutions Environment, ASE) at HMRC, I’ve completed detailed design for a high security government project and led project management office for a learning management system project at a large Bank.
I’ve learnt how to manage my time, how to put first things first, and how to manage expectations in each of my different roles. Getting quickly up to speed with a topic or methodology can be a real challenge but there’s always someone here you can talk to who’s done it before.
I believe one of Capgemini’s greatest strengths is its support structure. Before you start, you’re allocated a buddy to help with questions and queries. And once you’ve joined, you get a mentor who captures and reviews your progress and performance, as well as providing a listening ear.
At Capgemini, it’s up to you to make use of people’s expertise and, personally, I’ve really made the most of this network. I’ve always felt trusted by my colleagues, but more importantly I’ve been encouraged and supported to take on responsibility. As well as my mentor giving me guidance on my career path, I’ve been fortunate to have a coach, to support me with my own personal development.
